Covid-19: Government Aid to Freelancers

Many freelancer have found that their income has been slashed by the coronavirus lock-down. There are a variety of government programs designed to help. Here are links to the programs I’ve heard about and know people have benefitted from.

Nottingham Small Business Fund

The Nottingham City Council has a government grant for small businesses with workplace-related costs but without rates relief. They’re calling it the Nottingham Small Business Fund.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available for businesses who were trading prior to 11 March and who have been ineligible for other grant funding. This includes coworking space tenants and market/street traders.

It appears from the council’s description that your business must have over £3000 per year property-related costs (this requirement seems to have been added recently). Click below for more details.

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme

This is a taxable grant of up to £7500 – 80% of your average monthly trading profits – paid out in a single instalment covering 3 months. This grant can be claimed by sole traders who work from home. It is administered by the U.K. government.

The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant has now been extended. You can apply for the first grant until 13 July, and a second grant will be available in August. Click below to find out more.

Business Support Finder

This is an online quiz that assesses your eligibility for loans, tax relief and cash grants. I’d recommend that you try this AND look at your local council’s web site.
